As homeless service providers, typically we ask for
contributions from individuals or foundations on humanitarian grounds. We ask
people “to do the right thing” for those who are homeless. There is a growing
body of research that makes the case for serving homeless clients on economic
and public policy grounds.
This research insists that homeless persons remain on the street at great cost
to the public purse; they use public services at an extraordinary rate. Malcolm
Gladwell, in an article that appeared in The New Yorker , argues that a
chronically homeless person can cost the public up to one million dollars. Read
